An exhibition held in commemoration of the 125th birth anniversary of Josef Sudek
The exhibition will recall the profound and mutually enriching friendship between the photographer Josef Sudek (1896–1976) and the Prague Castle architect Otto Rothmayer (1892–1966). The focus of the extensive body of works on display will be both Sudek’s world-renowned and newly presented photographs of the architect’s realizations at Prague Castle, and above all a selection of images from the series A Walk in the Magic Garden and Remembrances, made in and around the architect’s villa in the Prague 6-Břevnov district. The collection will be complemented by some of Sudek’s photographs mounted after Rothmayer’s design (so-called puřidla from pour-le-art) and prototypes of the architect’s unique garden furniture. Also on view will be a number of authentic objects and artefacts made by Sudek’s and Rothmayer’s friends for whom the villa in Břevnov was a place of gathering and collaboration from the 1940s to the 1960s.
The exhibition is being made possible through the museum’s collaboration with The Prague City Museum that currently administers the Villa Rothmayer at No. 50, U Páté baterie Street in Prague 6. The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague participated in the villa’s renovation and refurbishment.
