One of the prominent art figures, yet little-remembered in the Czech Republic, is Helena van der Kraan, who was born in Prague as Helena Mázlová. In 1968 she emigrated to the Netherlands where she began her artistic career together with the sculptor Alex van der Kraan. Around 1970 she also took up photography and
over time became a respected artist. She exhibited her works in prestigious galleries, at the same time she engaged in design and teaching. Her photographs were characterized and appreciated as “oases of refinement, tranquility and attention to detail”. She died in Rotterdam in 2020 on the day of her 80th birthday. This is her very first solo exhibition in her native country, compiled from the artist’s gift to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague.
