Description

Fifty Years of Design from the Nordic Countries

Scandinavian design has always been and still is a great source of inspiration. It is associated with simplicity, modern elegance and clean, refined form. But what is truth and what is mere myth? This is the question addressed by the authors of the publication published to accompany the exhibition, which toured eleven countries during 2003-2006 and was also presented at the Milan International Furniture Fair 2004. The book documents the diversity of design that has shaped and strengthened the image of Scandinavian design from the 1950s to the present day. All the Nordic countries are represented: Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. The authors were inspired by Italo Calvino and his Six Notes for the next millennium: lightness, speed, precision, visibility, multiplicity and consistency. They capture design in a wider context – in a world where we are now more mobile, more communicative and inspired by other cultures. Over the last fifteen years, Scandinavian design has also moved internationally into new areas including music, video and fashion.
